A Visit to Westmead Children's Hospital
Our CEO Michael Lakiss-Smith recently visited The Children's Hospital at Westmead; one of Australia's leading paediatric facilities; to meet with clinical teams, specialist surgeons and continence nurses working with children with complex needs every day.

Dr Ani is a specialist surgeon in the Children's Kidney and Continence Ward at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, and a key figure behind SPUNG Group; a network dedicated to bridging the gap between hospital care and home support for children with complex urological and continence needs. It was through this hospital-to-home philosophy that the partnership with Night n Day came about; connecting families leaving clinical care with the right products and support on the other side.
The conversations were warm, frank, and at times genuinely surprising. Not because of what families were struggling with; but because of what they simply didn't know was available to them. The clinical teams were exceptional. The facility was outstanding. But there was a consistent gap between what the clinical team could offer inside the hospital and what families had access to when they got home.
That reaction; genuine surprise that custom-made washable continence products exist and are accessible to Australian families; was one we heard more than once. And it is what drives everything in this blog post.
When Standard Products Don't Fit, the Impact Goes Far Beyond the Product
Childhood incontinence affects more families than most people realise. An estimated 1 in 5 children at age 5 experience bedwetting, and hundreds of thousands of Australians under 18 live with some form of bladder or bowel challenge. For children with disability, complex medical histories or unusual body proportions, the challenge is compounded by a product market that was largely designed around an average body that doesn't represent theirs.
The clinical teams at Westmead told us something that stayed with us. Children who won't go to school because they are terrified of having an accident. Children who sit out of sport, miss birthday parties, and feel different to their peers; not because of their condition, but because the product they have been given doesn't actually work for their body.
A product that gapes at the leg, sits too low at the waistline, or simply doesn't have the right absorbency is not just uncomfortable, it is not doing the job it was designed for. It is a daily source of anxiety for children who deserve to just be children. And in many cases, the solution already exists. Families just haven't been told about it.

One of the most striking conversations at Westmead centred on children living with a stoma; where part of the bowel or urinary tract has been redirected through an opening in the abdomen. For these children, managing an ostomy appliance is a permanent daily reality. And standard continence products are simply not designed with them in mind.

Standard underwear and pants sit right where an ostomy bag sits. The waistband creates pressure on the appliance. The sizing doesn't account for the profile of the bag. Custom-made continence products may be funded under your NDIS plan, depending on your individual supports and how your needs are documented. We are an NDIS Registered Provider and our team can help you understand what may be available under your plan. A continence assessment is often the most effective first step in getting the right documentation in place.
