World Environment Day: Why Washable Incontinence Products Are the Swap Worth Making

This World Environment Day, 5 June, we're talking about the swap nobody else is.

You've probably heard about reusable coffee cups. Maybe you've switched to a keep cup, a tote bag, a bamboo toothbrush. These things matter. But there's a much bigger, much quieter waste problem sitting in Australian landfills right now - and almost nobody's talking about it.

Disposable incontinence products.

The hidden waste mountain

Here's a number that might stop you in your tracks: around 660 million disposable nappies, sanitary, and incontinence products are buried in Australian landfills every single year.

And it's getting worse. More adult incontinence products already go to landfill than baby nappies in Australia - and by 2030, researchers predict adult incontinence waste will be four to ten times greater than baby nappies. These products contain around 20% non-biodegradable material, which means most will sit in landfill for hundreds of years.

Disposable incontinence products alone account for between 5 and 15 per cent of all household waste sent to landfill. That's not a small problem. That's a national one.

The world is going reusable - and for good reason

This shift isn't just happening in incontinence. Across hygiene categories, people are waking up to the real cost of single-use products - many of which contain plastics and synthetic materials that take hundreds of years to decompose, produced using chemicals that generate significant carbon emissions.

Reusables offer a way out of that cycle. And the benefits go well beyond the planet.

Better for your body. Many disposable pads and briefs contain synthetic dyes, fragrances, and chemical absorbents that sit directly against sensitive skin. Washable incontinence underwear is made from soft, breathable fabrics - gentler on skin and free from the irritants that come standard in most disposables.

Better for your wallet. Reusables eliminate the endless cycle of monthly purchases. When you're managing incontinence, those weekly shopping runs add up fast. A quality set of washable underwear, cared for properly, can last for years - making it a one-time investment that pays for itself many times over.

Better for the planet. A single pair of reusable underwear can replace hundreds of disposable products over its lifespan. Multiply that across every person in Australia managing incontinence, and the impact is extraordinary.

What switching actually looks like

We get it - the idea of switching can feel overwhelming. But here's the reality: washable incontinence underwear looks and feels just like regular underwear. You wear it, wash it on a normal cycle, and wear it again. That's it.

At Night n Day, we've been helping Australians make this switch since 1989. Our range covers light to heavy absorbency, for men, women, and kids - so whatever you're managing, there's a washable solution designed for it.

The 1 in 3 Australians managing incontinence have a unique opportunity here. Not just to find a better product for themselves - but to be part of a movement that's genuinely good for the planet.

Small swap. Massive difference.

The environmental conversation has changed. People are no longer just asking "what can I recycle?" - they're asking "what can I stop throwing away in the first place?"

Washable incontinence products are one of the most powerful answers to that question. The savings in landfill waste, the savings on your shopping bill, the reduction in chemicals against your skin - it all adds up to something much bigger than a single product swap.

This World Environment Day, we're inviting you to think beyond the coffee cup.

Together, we'll take you there. Anywhere.
