Movember was the inspiration of two mates who came up with the idea in Melbourne back in 2003, when they realised the once-upon-a-time fashion trend of growing a moustache was pretty much nowhere to be seen and so they then decided to see if they could bring it back.
From the small beginnings of the first 30 men who took up the challenge, it has now grown into a world-wide global awareness campaign.
‘Movember’ pledges that by 2030 their aim is to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.
On average, men die 5 years earlier than they should, due to lack of going and getting proper health advice which can then lead to preventable diagnosis.
To help make this happen, we can all do our bit in continuing to raise awareness and highlight the need for men to get checked.
According to Movember: Prostate Cancer “If you’re 50, you should be talking to your doctor about PSA testing. If you’re of African or Caribbean descent, you need to start that conversation at 45. And if you have a brother or father with prostate cancer in their history, do it at 45.”
PSA testing is used to determine the measurement of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) concentration in the blood, and is the primary method of testing for prostate cancer.
According to Movember: Testicular Cancer is the #1 most common cancer in young males as approx 62% do not know how to check themselves. Movember wants young males to ask themselves the question “How’s your pair hanging?” and then to check their “Nuts and Bolts”.
Your doctor can help with education and to get checked for any possible early detection of testicular cancer arising from any irregularities.
According to Movember: Mental health & suicide prevention On average, world-wide, one man dies by suicide every day. In Australia the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high, with 3 out of 4 suicides in Australia are males.
