Washables, Disposables or Both? Dignity & Choice

Dignity & Choice

Washables, Disposables or Both?
Finding a Mix That Respects Your Dignity.

Your body, your routine, your choice.

Night n Day/Everyday Living/5 min read

Choosing continence products is personal. Your comfort, your daily routine, your leakage needs and your preferences all matter.

Some people love washable underwear. Others prefer the convenience of disposables. And plenty of people find that a mix of both works best. You don't have to pick one approach forever; your routine can change with your needs, your plans and the support around you.

Whatever you choose, one thing doesn't change: incontinence never takes away your dignity. Everyone deserves comfortable protection, privacy and care that respects their choices.

The basics

Washables and Disposables: What's the Difference?

Washable (reusable) products are designed to be washed, dried and worn again. Think absorbent underwear, reusable pads and waterproof bedding.

Disposable products are single use. They include pads, pull-up pants and fastening-style briefs, in a range of sizes and absorbency levels.

  Washables & reusables Disposables
Care routine Washing, drying and clean spares Replacement supplies and suitable disposal
Convenience Useful when laundry fits your routine Useful when washing and drying are less practical
Cost Higher upfront cost, with potential savings through repeated use Ongoing replacement costs
Waste Less reliance on single-use products, but needs laundering Creates waste after each use
Protection Depends on the product, fit and leakage needs Depends on the product, fit and leakage needs

Neither is automatically better. The right product is the one that suits your body, your needs and the way you live.

Mix and match

Why a Mix of Both Can Make Sense

Different days call for different solutions. You might wear washable underwear around home and pack disposables for a trip away. You might use disposables overnight with a washable bed pad underneath. Or you might simply switch depending on how much time you have for laundry that week.

A mixed routine could look like:

Washable underwear by day, with disposables on hand for days when laundry is tricky.

Disposables for an overnight stay, with your reusables ready when you get home.

Either type of underwear plus a washable bed pad to protect your bedding.

A flexible supply of both, so you can choose what suits you on the day.

Each product still needs to match your leakage and fit properly. Light-leak underwear won't suit heavier needs just because you like the style. A mixed routine also doesn't mean layering two absorbent pants or stacking waterproof pads; if leaks keep happening, ask a continence nurse about the right level of protection.

Dignity

Dignity and Incontinence Go Hand in Hand

Dignity isn't about which product you wear. It's about feeling in control, being listened to and being treated with respect.

You might care most about softness, a familiar underwear style, easy changes, less laundry or less waste. You might manage everything yourself, or you might need a hand with personal care. Every situation deserves the same respect.

If you support someone with continence care:

Involve them in decisions wherever you can. Ask what feels comfortable and what they'd prefer.

Explain what you're doing before you do it, and protect their privacy.

Use respectful language. Say “pads” or “pants”, not “nappies”, and “leaks”, not “accidents”.

Never guilt or pressure. Nobody should feel bad for choosing disposables, or pushed into reusables. The routine should work for the person living it.
Getting started

Find the Combination That Works for You

Start with your leakage needs, fit and comfort. Then think about washing facilities, storage, disposal, budget and any help you might need.

Try a small quantity before buying in bulk, follow the care instructions, and make sure reusables are completely dry before wearing them again.

If you're dealing with ongoing leaks, discomfort or skin irritation, talk to a continence nurse or your GP. The National Continence Helpline offers free, confidential advice on 1800 33 00 66, or you can book a continence assessment.
