What are incontinence pads and how often should you change them?

What are incontinence pads?

Incontinence pads are an insertable, removable, absorbent aid to provide stand-alone absorption to a garment (waterproof) or boost the capacity of an existing, absorbent garment (non-waterproof, booster pad).

Incontinence pads tend to have a ‘peanut’ shape to maximise comfort whilst not compromising the amount of absorbent surface area.

Incontinence pads are available as single-use disposable products (throw-away) or available as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective washable and reusable incontinence pads that can be washed and reused hundreds of times.

NIGHT N DAY Comfort has created a unisex washable and reusable range of gendered and unisex incontinence pads and inserts that are both waterproof and/or absorbent and able to be washed and reused over and over and over. NIGHT N DAY’s pads come in many different sizes and lengths, offering a size and absorbency or capacity for any individual and all needs.

In some instances, NIGHT N DAY has sewn an incontinence pad into regular underwear, creating an incontinence pant that looks just like normal underwear.

Anatomically shaped, the Night N Day waterproof incontinence pads range, provides comfortable and functional waterproof and absorbent protection against urinary and/or faecal leakage.

What are Incontinence pads used for?

NIGHT N DAY’s incontinence pads are used for absorbent protection against any urinary and/or faecal leakage - also known as incontinence leaks. In many cases, these pads also have a waterproof backing to prevent any moisture transfer.

NIGHT N DAY has created a range of waterproof incontinence pads and non-waterproof incontinence pads to help capture leakage as a result of incontinence. Depending on your needs, some people prefer non-waterproof pads that are inserted into waterproof pants, or waterproof covers and other people prefer incontinence pads that are fully waterproof and used mainly on their own, or with mesh pants.

Who should use incontinence pads?

We recommend they are used for;
  • Light bladder leakage
  • Faecal smearing
  • Menstruation
Incontinence pads are not just for light leakage, they can also be used;
  • To boost the absorbency of an existing waterproof product
  • When out and about and requiring a quick and easy change
  • If unable to find the best fitting size in standard sizing

What pads are best for Urinary Incontinence?

NIGHT N DAY’s range of absorbent incontinence pads are the best pads for urinary incontinence. With varying lengths and absorbent capacities, NIGHT N DAY offers a complete range of absorbent incontinence pads for urinary incontinence ensuring that a solution is available to all people living with incontinence.

How to change incontinence pads?

NIGHT N DAY’s incontinence pads are easy to change. Simply remove the soiled incontinence pad to be washed and reused. As the pads are easily interchangeable, you simply replace the soiled incontinence pad with a freshly washed, clean pad.

If the incontinence pad is built-in to an incontinence underwear, to change your product simply remove the underwear and wash and reuse just like normal underwear!

How often should incontinence pads be changed?

At Night N Day we recommend changing soiled pads approximately every 4 hours. Each individual’s needs will vary, therefore it’s best to assess the need to change as individually required.

Signs that you may need to change your incontinence pad is a highly saturated garment that no longer feels dry or comfortable to use or wear.

What is the difference between menstrual pads and incontinence pads?

Menstrual pads and incontinence pads are very similar in style, but can vary according to the level of absorbency provided and required from person to person.

Menstrual pads tend to offer a lower or lighter absorbency when compared to incontinence pads. As such, incontinence pads tend to be larger in size and possibly thicker in order to offer a sufficient amount of absorbency to cater to the needs of the individual and their urinary incontinence leaks. Some incontinence pads, such as NIGHT N DAY’s absorbent incontinence pads or waterproof incontinence pads can be up to 55cm long and offer over 600mL absorbent protection!
